Weaving: warp, weft, and rhythm
In plain weave, the weft passes over one warp thread and under the next, reversing this sequence on the following row. Recreate it with paper strips and examine which strip is visible at each crossing.
Set up a small loom evenly
Use suitable scissors; when working with children, an adult should prepare the notches. Use a small number of warp threads for your first piece.
Lay in the weft without pulling it tight
Plan color and texture
Make a simple stripe plan with three colors: for example, two narrow bands, one wide band, then two narrow 波段. The stripes do not all have to be equal; decide deliberately where to interrupt the repeat.
Finish and document the work
In the artwork details, identify the fiber only as precisely as your knowledge allows; do not label an unknown yarn as wool. Record the dimensions, technique, date of production, and care notes.
A three-color rhythm sample
- Draw a color plan with two narrow stripes and one wide stripe.
- Work in plain weave, checking the width and weft tension every few rows.
What commonly causes the edges of a weaving to draw inward?
Research its region, use, and a reliable source, and avoid un supported generalizations.
