Drawing: observation, proportion, and light
Drawing means exploring the relationships you can see, rather than reproducing the mental shorthand that comes from knowing what an object is called. In this lesson, you will use everyday objects to study measurement, space, line, and tone, then refine your work through observation.
Painting: color, composition, and layers
Using more paint colors does not, by itself, make a stronger painting. This module teaches you to build color relationships with a limited palette, guide the eye through a composition, and adapt your approach to the behavior of your paint.
Sculpture: mass, space, and balance
Sculpture is more than an image seen from the front; it is a spatial experience that changes as you move around it. Using an easily shaped material and cardboard, you will consider mass, empty space, and the viewer’s perspective together.
Ceramics: your first form and surface
Working with clay means responding to its moisture while shaping it, its shrinkage while drying, and the changes it undergoes in firing. Through a small form, you will learn about wall thickness, joining, and controlled drying, and plan any firing with a qualified studio.
Weaving: warp, weft, and rhythm
Weaving begins with threads crossing in two directions. By making a plain weave on a simple cardboard loom, you will explore tension, edges, and color rhythm, while learning to research traditional motifs with respect for their context.
Printmaking: marks, matrices, and editions
Printmaking explores how an image is transferred between surfaces. You will try a simple relief-printing process without cutting tools, observing image reversal, the amount of ink, and the differences between impressions.
Photographing artwork: light, color, and files
An artwork photograph should be both visually considered and faithful to the work. In this module, you will use a phone or camera to document two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, balancing color, framing, and file size.
Art history: learning to read an artwork
Art history goes beyond memorizing the names of movements: it asks how a work was made, whom it was made for, and under what conditions. In this lesson, you will combine close looking with source checking and learn to distinguish your interpretation from the evidence.
Byzantine art: space, light, and imagery
We will explore Byzantine art through the relationships between architecture, mosaics, icons, and everyday objects, rather than reducing it to images on gold backgrounds. The aim is to consider symbolic expression together with the setting in which a work was used.
Preventive care for artworks
The first step in conservation is to reduce the likelihood of damage, rather than to repair a work. You will develop habits for documenting, displaying, handling, and storing your own contemporary work, and learn to recognize when a conservator’s intervention is needed.
Building an artist portfolio and artwork records
A portfolio is more than a store of everything you have made: it communicates the ideas and coherence of your practice to a particular audience. In this module, you will prepare a short biography, a selection of works, a project statement, and accurate artwork details.
Copyright, artwork sales, and digital publishing
Selling a physical artwork, allowing its image to be used, and distributing a digital file are separate matters. This module introduces basic practices for accurate recordkeeping and for managing an inquiry transparently.
