Alona Hüsem

About the artist

Based in İstanbul, Alona Hüsem explores women, war, and the inner world through pastel works.

Biography

Alona Hüsem was born in the Rivne region of Ukraine in 1985. She graduated from the Faculty of Cultural Studies at Rivne State University (RDGU) in 2008 and has lived in İstanbul since 2011. The war Russia launched against Ukraine in 2022 made art a source of solace for her. That same year, she met local artist Coşkun Kula by chance and took several pencil-drawing lessons with him. Feeling an increasing pull toward color, she began working with pastels. She describes her works as unplanned and spontaneous, shaped by freedom of choice. Her paintings explore women, war, and the inner world, drawing inspiration from music, life stories, and well-known figures. Through her work, she aims to support Ukrainian veterans and promote Ukrainian culture. Having experienced art’s capacity for transformation, she has recently turned toward art therapy. To develop her knowledge in this field, she has also focused on “Art-Therapy in Work with Children Suffering from PTSD,” “Art-Therapy of Specialists of Helping Professions,” and “Military Psychology.” Since beginning her artistic journey in 2022, she has sought to improve her drawing skills and deepen her knowledge of art.
