Byzantine Art

Empire, city and image

Instead of addressing the Byzantine art as a single change base, we will evaluate architectural, mosaic, fresco, icon and small handcrafts produced in different geographies for centuries. We will discuss the relationship of function, space and image through Istanbul and Anatolian samples.

Three-hour program

Passing the Byzantine world from ancient age to the first chapter, building types and embellishment program. In the second part Hagia Sophia, church space, dome and light; then read mosaics and frescoes. After a short break, icons, iconoclazm discussions and late-term examples. The final chapter is a solution and questions together with a selected visual.

Learning outcomes

You will learn to ask questions based on resources about the function of a structure or visual, which will see the difference between Ikonography and üslup. We will evaluate the uncertainties in terms of terminization and horse.
